Overview
The Leadership Foundation for Higher Education (LFHE) provides a dedicated support and advice service on matters of leadership, governance and management to all the UK universities and higher education colleges (HEIs).
As part of their service and ongoing commitment to their members, the LFHE wanted to provide dedicated support to HEI Staff Development practitioners, empowering them to deliver relevant, effective learning activities to a broad range of staff, including academics, professional managers and functional specialists.
What were the organisation's needs?
The LFHE is committed to delivering significant and visible contributions towards equipping current and future leaders in higher education with the skills and awareness to help them deliver continuous improvement and respond to future challenges.
To accommodate such a large audience with diverse needs, it was clear from the outset that the LFHE required an all-encompassing solution.
To support its commitment to learning and development, the LFHE was looking for a cost-effective solution to equip its members with relevant and topical knowledge and resources, thus enabling them to design, deliver and execute engaging and effective learning interventions. However, the LFHE did not have the time or money to invest in designing and deploying a bespoke solution.

Why GoodPractice?
The LFHE and GoodPractice worked in partnership to design and deliver a branded HR toolkit, accessible to every HEI Staff Development practitioner across the UK.
The GoodPractice toolkit provides the Staff Development practitioners with support via access to high quality development materials across a wide range of key organisational subjects, including Talent Management, Leadership and Learning and Development.
What toolkit was provided?
Through the provision of the toolkit, the LFHE was able to provide an additional membership benefit which in return added real value to the staff development community.
To further support and inspire members when planning new activities and projects, the toolkit also provides access to leading thinking articles and real case study examples, allowing users to reflect on organisational issues, challenges and solutions from an external perspective.
What were the outcomes?
Due to the wealth of resources available, LFHE members are now saving valuable time which was previously spent preparing learning and development materials and activities.
All the resources within the toolkit are easy to find and available to download and adapt. The members can simply customise the resources to suit their specific needs at any time, thus creating templates, diagnostics, questionnaires and top tips that are used for:
- formal training events
- organisational development activities
- coaching individuals, or developing teams
The LFHE Staff Development community also enjoys the additional benefit of sharing knowledge and best practice with colleagues across the UK by posting their own materials into the toolkit and discussing issues in the forum.
Client testimonial
“The GoodPractice Knowledge Bank is an invaluable resource. It saves me time and provides some useful new ideas and summaries of tools and thinking on a variety of topics. Selective use of the models and strategies is also helpful when working with teams at away days to stimulate their thinking and provide a starting point for discussions about what will work in their own environment. There are also lots of diagnostics in the tools section, and I love to use these as pre-work before a workshop – they are simple and effective in getting people engaged with the topic.”
Claire Bradshaw, Staff Development Advisor, Loughborough University
“I just had to let you know how absolutely wonderful the unit [on Recruitment and Induction] was! I run recruitment and selection events here for general staff and this has helped me no end!!!! Thank you for this.”
Laura Foster, Staff Development Officer, University of Surrey
